Pond Construction

1.  Be creative!
Excavate the pond as you like.   Remember to add shelves (usually 1 tier per foot of depth).  These shelves serve many uses:
* Aquatic Plants
* Safety - If someone were to step into your pond accidently, it would not be a steep slope, but a staircase.
* Strength & Stability - Having these shelves are much more stable and less likely to collapse compared to a steep tall wall.

2. Place your liner and underlayment
The underlayment allows gas to escape from underneath the liner while protecting your liner from sharp objects. Pictured is a recommended 45 mil EDPM liner. To find out what liner size you need, use our calculator.
3. Place your rocks and gravel
Having your plant shelves, underlayment and liner in place, it is time to add the rocks. Use our calculator to find out how many rocks you will need. Remember to place the largest rocks on the bottom, stacking progressively smaller rocks as you build vertically.
4. Add water
Obviously not very complicated.  Your water will appear murky until the sediment from the rocks settles out.
5. Add plants and fish...Enjoy!
Again, be creative!  Remember when adding your fish to add them gradually. DO NOT add more than a few fish at one time. Doing so could kill your fish because of rising ammonia levels associated with fish density in a pond.
